Madelyn Rosenberg, author of Nanny X, Skyped with Ms. Gilmore's 3rd grade class. The author made the visit interactive by helping the students "color your story" and "use your senses" to add meaning to writing. While describing monsters the students reached out to touch it. To go along with their monster description students were asked to think about what it ate for breakfast. Responses covered all sorts of food groups, but the most creative goes to Kain, with his "mud covered cockroaches". Ms. Rosenberg gave students simple advice if they want to be a writer: "Write a lot and read a lot". She herself is working with a friend to write a novel during the month of November and they are alternating days of writing chapters. Mrs. Cunningham introduced the students to the novel Nanny X in class, and Ms. Gilmore will be continuing it as a read aloud so students can see how it ends! After the Skype the students shared their reactions using the A-E-I-O-U strategy and the thing the students found interesting was that the author keeps a writing journal, and their next question was "what's in the journal?" We'll have to wait for her next book to see!

Thanks so much for the Skype visit. I had a great time talking with all of you in Ms. Gilmore's class and listening to your ideas! In answer to the question about what's in my writing journal: It has bits of a science fiction story I've been working on, along with some poems and a picture book. It also has little doodles (I should post some online) and writing exercises like the one that we did in class. And sometimes it just has words, like "splash." Older journals even have things like the eyebrows from my Winnie the Pooh (he's very old and they fell off so I just glued them in there). And all of my journals are full of ideas about things I'd like to write someday but haven't gotten to yet. Thanks again for the visit! Madelyn
