After our monthlong reading challenge focused on the I Survived series, a select group of students got to participate in an author Skype with Lauren Tarshis, the series author. The students were very excited to ask questions and share about their reading experience.
Lauren Tarshis read chapter 1 from the next I Survived book about the Hindenburg disaster. We all wanted her to keep going, because as she explained the first chapter is a "hook"; though in her writing she actually writes it last.
So far in the series all the main characters have been boys, and many people wondered why? She revealed that the book she is currently writing has a main character named Jessie, who is a girl! The book focuses on the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens, the volcano in Washington.
The 4th grade students are participating in a book sharing project using Flipgrid. Students have completed a Book Recommendation Card, and are recording their recommendation using the Flipgrid app. The board is being shared with David C. Barrow Elementary School in Athens, GA. Some of the first students to add to our board were Dasne, Noelle, and Monica in Mrs. Johnson's class. They were very brave to share first. Big thanks to Mr. Plemmons, the media coordinator at Barrow Elementary for collaborating with Mrs. Cunningham on this project.
Mrs. Delgado's class Skyped with Ranger Dan at the Dinosaur National Monument; part of the National Park Service located in Utah. The students are very interested in learning about dinosaurs and were able to share what they know.
The students have loved adding dinosaur names to their word wall in the classroom. Ranger Dan shared the fossil wall that is part of the monument, where evidence of 11 different dinosaur species has been found.
